Hydrolyzed Collagen + Resistance Exercise: 15g vs. 30g Dose-Response Study

Does collagen dose matter? A 2024 randomized, double-blind crossover study provides unusually direct evidence because it compared two higher doses of hydrolyzed collagen head-to-head: 15 g versus 30 g, alongside a 0 g control.

The study focused on resistance-trained, middle-aged men performing lower-body resistance exercise. Its main finding was clear: both 15 g and 30 g of vitamin C-enriched hydrolyzed collagen increased a blood marker associated with type I collagen formation compared with 0 g, and 30 g produced a significantly greater response than 15 g.

What the researchers studied

Eight resistance-trained men, with an average age of 49 years, completed all three study conditions in a double-blind crossover design. Before a standardized lower-limb resistance exercise session, participants consumed one of three interventions:

  • 0 g hydrolyzed collagen
  • 15 g vitamin C-enriched hydrolyzed collagen
  • 30 g vitamin C-enriched hydrolyzed collagen

The exercise session consisted of four sets of 10 repetitions of lower-limb resistance exercise performed at the participants' maximum load for that protocol.

The primary collagen-synthesis marker showed a dose-response

The researchers measured serum N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, commonly abbreviated PINP. PINP is used as a marker associated with type I collagen formation.

In other words, this was not simply a study showing that collagen supplementation did something compared with placebo. It demonstrated a statistically significant dose-response relationship under the conditions tested: 30 g produced a greater PINP response than 15 g, and both collagen doses produced a greater response than 0 g.

Why the 15 g result matters

The 15 g dose was enough to produce a significant difference from the 0 g condition in these middle-aged, resistance-trained men. The authors described this as rescuing the collagen-synthesis response to resistance exercise, because resistance exercise without collagen did not increase serum PINP in this group.

This helps explain why higher-dose collagen strategies are increasingly studied in exercise and connective-tissue research. It also gives consumers a more useful framework than assuming that every collagen serving is interchangeable regardless of dose.

Why the 30 g result matters

The most important result for dose comparison is that 30 g did not merely beat the control. It also produced a significantly greater PINP response than 15 g.

The researchers also found higher blood availability of several amino acids associated with collagen composition and synthesis, including glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, with the 30 g intervention compared with the lower-dose conditions. They linked this increased amino-acid availability with the greater collagen-synthesis response.

What this study does not prove

The findings are compelling, but they should not be stretched beyond the study design.

  • The study was small. Only eight men participated.
  • The participants were resistance-trained, middle-aged men. The result cannot automatically be generalized to women, sedentary adults or every age group.
  • The study examined an acute biological response around resistance exercise. It did not directly test long-term outcomes such as wrinkle reduction, joint pain, tendon injury recovery or visible changes in skin.
  • PINP is a biomarker. A greater PINP response is not the same thing as proving a proportionally greater real-world clinical benefit.
  • 24 g was not one of the tested doses. The study compared 0 g, 15 g and 30 g, so it would be inappropriate to claim that 24 g produces a specific effect based on this trial alone.

What this means when comparing collagen doses

This study is important because it challenges the idea that dose is irrelevant. Under these specific exercise conditions, more hydrolyzed collagen produced a greater collagen-synthesis marker response.

That does not mean that more collagen is always better for every goal. Skin, joint, bone and exercise studies use different materials, outcomes and populations. But it does mean that higher-dose collagen can have a scientifically meaningful rationale, particularly for consumers who intentionally want a substantial amount of collagen in one serving.
